TRAVEL: Hobbiton, New Zealand

When planning my travels around New Zealand the one place that was at the very top of my must have to visit list was Hobbiton! I'm a massive massive fan of Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit films so to visit the filming location was literally a dream to me.  Hobbiton is located near Matamata on the North Island of New Zealand and was one of our stops on the Kiwi Experience bus

You hop on a Hobbiton bus and after a short bus journey you arrive at the Hobbit holes.  There are around 44 Hobbit holes that had been re-constructed for 'The Hobbit' film after being destroyed after 'Lord Of The Rings' and they all vary in size depending on who would be filming next to them.

There is so much detail to Hobbiton, for example all the props such as washing lines, wheelbarrow, chairs etc.  There are also real vegetable gardens that are tended to by the staff. I had my photo taken with nearly every single Hobbit Hole but then we saw Bag-End, this was the one hole that you couldn't walk right up to unlike the others where you could even walk inside them (not that they were actual sets or anything).

Not only is there Hobbit holes and the actual fence where Bilbo Baggins shouts "I'm going on an adventure" but there is also the Green Dragon Inn where we had a free cider and I actually felt like I was in the films, it had such an amazing atmosphere and was fully kitted out as per the film.

Visiting Hobbiton was definitely a highlight of my trip to New Zealand, I'm a major film geek and visiting film locations is always amazing for me! I think even if you're not a fan of Lord of The Rings or The Hobbit you would still enjoy this tour as it's just a really amazing film set and the amount of detail, time and effort that must go in to preserve it is just insane.  I'm so happy that I've finally visited and had my photo taken with a Hobbit Hole!

Have you ever visited Hobbiton? Would you like to?
